Passenger

Before you fly

The essentials for a smooth departure from Modlin: timing, security, baggage, documents and what to do when things go wrong.

Timing

When to arrive

Be at the terminal 3 hours before departure. Modlin is a compact airport, but most flights leave in waves, so security can be busy. Airlines close check-in and bag drop 40 minutes before departure and gates about 20–30 minutes before. Nobody is accepted after the gate closes.

  1. Check in online at home

Ryanair and Wizz Air expect online check-in; a desk check-in fee applies otherwise. Download or print your boarding pass.

  2. Bag drop (if you have hold luggage)

Desks are in the departures hall. Hand luggage only? Go straight to security.

  3. Security control

Allow 20–40 minutes in the general lane, or under 5 minutes with Fast Track.

  4. Gate

Gates are 2–5 minutes from security. Watch the board: gate numbers appear about 40 minutes before departure.

Security

Security rules

The same EU rules apply as at every airport in Europe. Preparing before you reach the belt saves time for everyone.

Liquids, gels and aerosols
Containers of up to 100 ml each, all in one transparent resealable bag of up to 1 litre. One bag per passenger, taken out of your hand luggage. Exceptions: baby food and medicines needed during the flight (be ready to show them).
Electronics
Take laptops and tablets out of your bag and place them in a separate tray. Phones, cameras and power banks stay with you in hand luggage, never in hold luggage.
Clothing
Remove jackets, belts with large buckles and items from your pockets. You may be asked to remove shoes.
Not allowed in hand luggage
Sharp objects, tools, sports bats, flammable items, weapons and replicas. Full list on your airline's website.
Medical implants, wheelchairs, medicines
Tell the officer before screening. Alternative screening is available; see security control and disabilities (in Polish) or ask at a help point.

Online check-in

Ryanair and Wizz Air

Both airlines open online check-in from 24 hours (free seat selection) up to 2 hours before departure, or earlier if you have paid for a seat. Checking in at the desk costs extra. Save the boarding pass to your phone or print it.

Documents

Which documents you need

Schengen countries
Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Portugal and most other EU destinations: an ID card or passport valid for the whole trip. There are no systematic border checks, but airlines verify your identity at the gate, so carry the document anyway.
United Kingdom and Ireland
Outside Schengen, so you pass through passport control at Modlin and at your destination. For the UK, EU citizens need a passport (ID cards are not accepted) and, since 2025, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) obtained online before travel. Ireland accepts EU ID cards and passports.
Non-EU citizens
Check visa requirements for your destination and make sure your Schengen stay is within the 90/180-day rule. Border guards may ask for return tickets and proof of funds.
Children
Every child needs their own document. Children travelling with one parent or another adult may be asked for a consent letter.

Allow extra time for passport control on UK and Irish flights, especially early in the morning.

Passenger rights

Delays, cancellations, denied boarding

Under EU Regulation 261/2004 you may be entitled to care (meals, hotel), rerouting or a refund, and compensation of EUR 250–600 depending on distance, unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances.

  1. Complain to the airline first in writing; keep boarding passes and receipts.
  2. No reply within 30 days or you disagree? Contact the Passenger Rights Ombudsman at the Polish Civil Aviation Authority (Rzecznik Praw Pasażerów przy ULC), which runs free out-of-court dispute resolution.

Travelling with

Families, pets and special needs

Families with children

Families with children under 5 use the priority security lane free of charge. Baby-changing facilities are in every toilet block, and there is a play corner near gate 3. Prams can be taken to the gate on most airlines.

Families (in Polish)

Pets

Dogs and cats fly in the cabin or hold depending on your airline's rules; most low-cost airlines at Modlin do not carry pets except assistance dogs. Within the EU you need a pet passport, microchip and valid rabies vaccination.

Reduced mobility and hidden disabilities

Free assistance from the car park or bus stop to your seat on board. Request it 48 hours ahead. Sunflower lanyards are available at the information desk.
